about

This sound work is based on wind recordings made in The Hague and Leiden, The Netherlands during winter 2011. Originally composed for the radio show “Broadcasting Den Haag”, produced at the Institute of Sonology for Framework Radio, and curated by Raviv Ganchrow and Patrick McGinley.

The source environmental recordings focus on sensory impressions created by the interaction of wind and the urban context. The wind seems a too elusive phenomenon to be "captured" in "itself". The principles of most conventional microphones are based on a diaphragm which moves accordingly to air pressure variations. Therefore, when the wind blows directly on the membranes, it easily results in distortion. The recordings featured in this work are based on indirect listening approaches. Less-conventional transducers were used to tap into the action of wind energies through non-air mediums (i.e. liquid water and solid architectural structures).

The piece has also been published in the double-CD compilation SOUND-IN 2012, released for the 1st Sound-In Programme for New Creators at Estampa, Spanish Multiple Art Fair in Madrid, October 2012.
